Narratives Beyond the Norm: A Look at LGBTQ+ and GSRD Identities in Music Therapy
Overview:
This training provides an in-depth look at the many different sexualities, gender identities, and relationship styles that our clients may have, the different labels they use, and an overview of the issues they - and we - might face in therapy in relation to these. Most people are aware of the acronym ‘LGBTQ’: this session offers a closer look and greater understanding of those identities within that spectrum that are not as often-represented, or that may be misunderstood and maligned. We will look at how to work with a client who discloses their orientation; how music therapy can help clients and therapists explore and come to terms with their identities; and how to work without prejudice and with curiosity.
Participants will learn:
- A greater understanding of the LGBTQ+ spectrum and GSRD (Gender, Sex, and Relationship Diverse) identities
- A greater understanding of the challenges, stereotypes, and prejudices that surround people who are publicly non-cishet
- How to challenge their own assumptions, histories, and prejudices about sexual orientations, gender identities, and non-monogamous/diverse relationship styles
- How and when to help a client ‘come out’, and how and when to self-disclose as a therapist
- A sensitive approach to working with topics of sex and sexuality with clients and in wider work contexts
Who is this training suitable for?
This training is suitable for all Music Therapists, trainee Music Therapists and community musicians who want a better understanding of the LGBTQ+ spectrum and GSRD identities, and is particularly recommended for therapists who want to work with young adults who are finding their identity. Music therapists who are exploring their own gender, sexuality, or relationship style and wish to learn more about working with clients who identify similarly to them may also benefit from this training.
