Safe in Sound Dementia Project Report
We are excited to share the outcomes of our Safe in Sound project, a 12-week pilot programme that ran from April to July 2024, providing music therapy sessions for individuals living with dementia and their carers. Led by our experienced Music Therapist, Gareth, and supported by professional musicians from the English Sinfonia, participants engaged in music-making activities that helped them reconnect with their love for music, improve communication, and foster meaningful social connections.
As one participant's wife shared:
I’ve seen him come alive because Frank doesn’t have much conversation at home…coming here, he comes alive. It’s made a big difference to him.
Throughout the programme, participants experienced emotional and cognitive benefits, built friendships, and formed deeper connections with their carers and others in the group. The sessions culminated in the Community Voices performance, bringing together participants, musicians, and the wider community to celebrate the transformative power of music.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to The Clare Foundation (Angel's Den) for providing the primary funding for the Safe in Sound project. We would also like to thank Mobbs Memorial Trust and the Douglas McMinn Trust for their generous support in making this project possible.
As we continue this important work, we are thrilled to share the full report below, which includes detailed case studies, outcome data, and plans for the future of the programme.
